The Suction and Discharge Process
Air-Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps are a type of positive displacement pump, meaning they move a consistent volume of fluid with each stroke. This ensures a steady output, regardless of variations in discharge pressure, as long as the pump operates within its specified range.
An AODD pump operates using two flexible diaphragms, along with two inlet and two outlet ball check valves, to efficiently transfer fluids. The pump’s design divides the two chambers into air and fluid sections, separated by the diaphragms.
The diaphragms are connected by a common shaft housed in the center section of the pump. This configuration allows the pump to simultaneously perform suction on one side while discharging fluid on the other.
When the common shaft moves to the right, the left diaphragm is drawn toward the center section, creating a vacuum in the left chamber. This vacuum lifts the lower ball check valve, allowing fluid to enter the chamber through the suction manifold. Concurrently, the diaphragm on the right side pushes fluid out of the pump through the discharge manifold.
As the right diaphragm completes its discharge stroke, the air distribution system detects this and shifts the common shaft to the left. This movement pressurises the fluid in the left chamber, lifting the upper ball check valve, and forces the fluid out through the discharge manifold. The cycle then repeats, providing continuous, efficient pumping action.
Importantly, the output pressure of an AODD pump cannot exceed the pressure of the compressed air driving it, which acts as a built-in safety feature, preventing over-pressurisation at the discharge.
AODD pumps potential week point is the air operated shaft that moves the diaphragms left and right for two reasons:
- AODD pump diaphragms are fixed on the shaft support by one point, which makes them wear out quickly.
Find out how ArgalAir fixed this. - Frost can form when compressed air is released from the piston area.
Make sure the compressed air is dry to avoid this.
