The eccentric screw pump is one of the most fascinating pump types I have ever come across. When I first discovered it, I was struck by its unique and innovative design, originally developed by René Moineau in the early 20th century. He originally designed it to pump aircraft fuel to ensure continuous fuel feeding when planes were looping or upside down.
Today, it exists in size from a few centimetres to 8 metres or more, with a wide range of applications.
How Does an Eccentric Screw Pump Works?
The eccentric screw pump works on a simple but effective principle.
At the heart of the pump is a helical rotor that rotates eccentrically within a double-helical, elastomer-lined stator. As the rotor rotates, cavities are created between the rotor and stator.
These cavities progress from the suction side to the discharge side of the pump, carrying the liquid within them. The continuous rotation of the rotor creates a series of sealed cavities that move the fluid smoothly and evenly, without pulsation. This design ensures gentle handling of shear-sensitive fluids and allows pumping of viscous, abrasive and solids-laden materials.
This representation of the working of an eccentric screw pump is due to Mr. Petteri Aimonen who has provided licence free access to it on Wikipedia.
It is an excellent chart, probably the best of the kind at this time, and Mr Aimonen deserves a High Five :).
The rotation of the rotor into the stator and the move up and downs of the rotor into the stator self explain the creation of the separate cavities that ensure a regular flow.

The precision fit between the rotor and stator minimises backflow and provides highly efficient and reliable pumping performance. The modular design of the progressive cavity pump also allows for easy maintenance and customisation to meet specific application requirements.
